Alton West Hinshaw, 84, Noblesville, passed on Wednesday, December 22, 2010 at Riverview Hospital in Noblesville. He was born on April 3, 1926 in the outskirts of Zionsville, IN. He was the sixth child and second son of Goff Chesney and Clara Ethel (West) Hinshaw.
Alton was a member of Cumberland Christian Church. He was an Elder and Deacon for Arcadia Christian Church and a founding member of White River Christian Church. He was also a member of the Arcadia Masonic Lodge.
His education included training from Chicago Technical School and Indiana University, where he earned his degree in Business Administration and Accounting. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII, serving on-board the USS Harrison DD573 in the Pacific Theater. He served the Navy for 41 years - active duty for two years and the remainder of his time employed by Naval Avionics as a Systems Analyst. Alton loved raising animals. He enjoyed hunting, beagle field trials, exhibiting animals, fishing, woodworking, gardening, farming and writing short stories. Alton writes in one of his many short stories, "one of the most important things that can happen to a person occurs when his interests grow outward toward other people."
Alton was a passionate volunteer. He was honored by the State Fair for 55 years of dedicated service to the Indiana State Fair rabbit and poultry department. He participated in United Way's Day of Caring for 17 years. PrimeLife enrichment stated that "Al Hinshaw has always gone above and beyond what has been asked of him." This statement was true for all aspects of Alton's life.
Alton was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie Ann Hinshaw, whom he dearly loved for 64 years. She died September 7, 2010. They married on an Easter Sunday, April 6, 1946. They raised four children together in Arcadia, IN. Also preceding him in death are his daughter, Pamela Denise Dorris; grandson, Paul Allen Coverdale, Jr.; one brother and five sisters.
He is survived by his children, Teresa Ann (Paul) Coverdale, Jody Jean Jones and Gary Hinshaw; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and brother, L. Dale (Velma) Hinshaw.
Services will be held on Monday, December 27, 2010 at 11:00AM at Randall & Robert Funeral Home, 1685 Westfield Road, Noblesville, IN, with calling there on Sunday, December 26 from 2:00PM - 6:00PM. Burial will be in Lincoln Memory Gardens in Zionsville.
