Andrew James "Jim" Lagomarcino, 88, died at The Residences at Thomas Circle Senior Living in Washington, DC, January 9, 2016. Jim was a member of the Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle. Jim was born in Burlington, Iowa March 10th, 1927. Son of the late Ida (Snyder) Lagomarcino and Andrew Sylvester Lagomarcino.
Jim graduated High School in 1944, a member of National Honor society and earning eight varsity letters in athletics. He was an Eagle Scout. He attended the University of Iowa and started for the Hawkeyes Football team. In early 1945 he enlisted in the US Navy, serving aboard the USS Marine Phoenix as a Pharmacists Mate in the Pacific theater during WW ll. He returned to college after discharge from the Navy. He worked as a Park Ranger at Yellowstone National Park in 1948. He graduated from college in 1949 and started working in his family business, Lagomarcino-Grupe Wholesale fruit and vegetable company for two years. Jim then worked at Keokuk Electro-Metals Company in Human Resources, editing their employee magazine for eight years. During this time Jim was President of the Iowa Industrial Editors Association. Jim was offered a position with Perfect Circle, editing their in house magazine, the Magic Circle, in 1960 and moved his family to Hagerstown Indiana. After Dana Corporation acquired Perfect Circle Jim wanted to stay in Hagerstown and became a lifelong entrepreneur and publisher. He became part owner of V-Plex Clutch Corporation, helping manage and selling their products. Jim later purchased the Hagerstown Exponent newspaper with former co-worker Floyd Lacy from Perfect Circle. Jim published the Hagerstown Exponent weekly newspaper and administered printing production for Exponent Publishers until his retirement.
Jim was a member of Rotary Club-Paul Harris Fellow, Hagerstown/Nettle Creek School Corporation School Board, Wayne County Chamber of commerce, and past President of the Indiana Republican Editorial Association. Jim enjoyed working in his spare time as a High School and College Football Official, playing in his local poker club, playing bridge and Golf.
Jim was preceded in death by his sister, Joanne (Lagomarcino) Hurst, son Mark Andrew Lagomarcino, granddaughter Sarah Frances (David) Lagomarcino, wife Mary Jane "Janie" (Ellison) Lagomarcino, and companion Virginia "Ginny" (Jessen) Kraatz.
Survivors include sons, Joseph "Joe" Lagomarcino and David (Jennifer) Lagomarcino. Jacqueline "Jackie" (Mark) Lagomarcino. Grandchildren, Andrew (Reshma) Lagomarcino and Meghan (Lagomarcino) (Nick) Smith, Son and daughter of Mark. Anne (Esteban) (Lagomarcino) Sagredo, Nancy Lagomarcino, Daughters of Joe, and Hope Lagomarcino, daughter of David. Great Grand Children Samuel Sagredo (Anne), Brayden and Arya Lagomarcino (Andrew), and Calvin Smith (Meghan).
A Funeral mass was held at the Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle at 9:30 AM February 27th, 2016 in Washington, D.C.
A celebration of life will be held at Willie and Red's in Hagerstown, Indiana from 1-4 PM April 9th, 2016.
