Beatrice Theresa (McMahon) Leonard, 71, of Fishers, died July 8, 2009. Born on September 26, 1937 to the late Michael and Ceilia (Hynes) McMahon in Galway Ireland. She was one of 5 children having a twin brother. Bea lived in Kilmilhil Ireland as a young child. Her parents immigrated their family to the near eastside of Indianapolis in 1947.
Bea was a graduate of St.Agnes Catholic High School, class of 1956. She valued education by taking accelerated classes during the summer at Tech High School. At age 55, Bea received her B.S. of Science degree from Indiana Wesleyan College.
She was the Mother of five fun, ornery and successful Irish lads Joe (Kathy), John (Rebecca), Frank (Erin), Dan (Debbie) and Tom (Robin) and one beautiful daughter Theresa (David). Bea took great pride in her family. She taught them to value their faith, to value hard work and instilled in them the importance of higher education.
It was important for Bea to teach her children how to get involved and seek opportunities to advance themselves. Her oldest son Joe got his first job through Mayor Hudnut's Uni-Gov program in the early 1970's.
Through her encouragement, the Leonard's were involved running the Indianapolis Mini Marathon. For several years, all 6 children ran in the Mini. Combined, they have over 80 years experience running the mini. Many years, she was a volunteer at the Mini marathon. She loved hosting her family the night before the mini for her famous Johnny Marzetti pasta meal.
She worked at St. Vincent's Hospital as a patient care representative for over 17 years. After receiving her associate's degree, she worked in the Lawrence and Hamilton County school systems. In recent years, she worked at Fairbanks Hospital. Bea enjoyed many friendships through St. Vincent's, teaching in the schools and Fairbanks.
Survivors include her 6 children and 19 grandchildren, two brothers Gabe McMahon(Patti) and twin brother Dan(California)
Bea will be will always be remembered for her incredible strength, beauty and friendship and her ability to give a good crack with a wooden spoon. Remember, she had 5 boys.
Visitation will be Sunday, July 12 from 2-6 at Randall and Roberts Fishers Mortuary with a wake service at 5:00 PM.
Mass of Christian burial will be Monday, July 13 at 11:00 am at St. Louis deMontfort Catholic Church, Fishers, Indiana.
