Betty Saferight

Betty Jean (Hicks) Saferight, 93, of Indianapolis, passed away Friday, May 17, 2019 at her home in the El Beulah Christian Retirement Community where she had lived for the past 9 years.  She was born in Houston, Indiana in Jackson County on January 3, 1926 to the late James Henry Hicks and Mary Jane (Hearth) Hicks.  She had thirteen brothers and sisters.  Betty graduated from Mitchell High School in 1943.  After graduating she worked for Curtiss Wright Aircraft Manufacturers and Diamond Chain before marrying Emsley Eugene (Gene) Saferight on August 30, 1946.

The beach was her happy place, and Betty enjoyed watching the waves as they rolled to the shore, looking for shells and searching for shark’s teeth.  She enjoyed the sea air, spotting a dolphin on the horizon and watching her family having fun in the surf.

Betty enjoyed dancing, both watching it and participating in it. Betty and Gene were members of the Laughing Squares Square Dance Club.  Betty would make beautiful outfits for their dances.  She got the whole family up on their feet and taught us how to dance!  She enjoyed traveling, working puzzles, painting, tending her flowers, watching birds, going to plays, music and playing games.  She was active in her community.

Betty was a homemaker and beloved Mother to sons, Gary (Jeanne) and Jim (Cindy) who survive.  She was an awesome Grandmother to Christopher, David and Jennifer to whom she cradled, sang to, read stories and played games with.
She was a fierce competitor when it came to playing video games or any games with the grandkids!  She attended sports, band, church, special school events and always kept current with her grandkids.  Her open arms, gentle hugs and smiling face will be missed by all.  She was a Great Grandmother to James, Anthony, Christopher Jr., Sophia, Jaymia, James, Savannah and Harper.

Proceeding Betty in death are her husband, Gene; two grandchildren, Gregory and Eric; brothers, Stanley, Sherman, Lennie and Lloyd; and sisters, Charlotte, Delista, Alma, Verna, Ida, Myrtle, Martha, Kathryn and Frances.

Visitation will be on Thursday, May 23, 2019 from 11:00am-1:00pm, with the service beginning at 1:00pm, at Fall Creek Baptist Church, 8901 Fall Creek Road, in Indianapolis. Reverend Clayton Knight will officiate.  Burial will follow at 4:00pm at Maple Hill Cemetery, 709 Harding Street in Plainfield, Indiana.

The Saferight family has entrusted Randall & Roberts Fishers Mortuary with Betty’s care.
