Byron W. Harris, 81, Noblesville (formerly of Lafayette and Bloomington, IN), died peacefully surrounded by his family on July 5, 2010. Byron Wallace Harris was born January 20, 1929 in Medaryville, IN to Ralph Wallace and Zelma (Campbell) Harris.
He was a 1947 graduate of Medaryville High School. He was a railroader for 45 years. He started with the Monon RR in 1947 and worked his way up to Vice President of Operations. He retired from CSX Transportation in 1992. He was a member of Medaryville Masonic Lodge, South Bend Scottish Rite and Lafayette American Legion.
Byron was a Korean War veteran, serving in the US Navy from 1951 to 1955. He married Carol Ann Lowry on March 18, 1956 in Francisville, IN. They lived in Bloomington, IN from 1964 to 1979 and raised their daughters there. They moved to Lafayette in December 1979 where he stayed until the death of his wife, Carol Ann in 2003. He then moved to Noblesville to be close to his two daughters.
He is survived by his two daughters, Cynthia (Chris) Harris Quimby of Westfield & Elizabeth (Garry) Harris Danz of Zionsville; four grandchildren, Matthew (Stephanie) Quimby, Christa Quimby, Lauren (Michael) Danz LaMont & Chad Danz; one great-grandson, Ryan Wallace Quimby (or whom he was very proud); brother, Bernard A (Charlotte) Harris of Lansing, MI; sister Rosemary (Elmer) Harris Shortz of Zionsville; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 11AM to 1PM on Thursday, July 8, 2010 with services immediately following at 1PM at Frain Mortuary, 228 S. Brook St, Francisville, IN, with burial in Independence Cemetery in Medaryville, IN.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Indiana Women in Need Foundation, in honor of his mother, Zelma, sister, Rosemary, and daughter Cynthia.
