David was born April 7, 1921 in Noblesville, IN and was a resident of Hamilton County his entire life. His health had been deteriorating the last several years, but he wanted to remain in the little old farm house that his parents had originally purchased when he was 2 years old. As a result of a fall in his house, and other health complications, he passed away on July 12, 2008.
David was the only son among five sisters born to M. D. and Pearl Gatewood. He spent his youth helping his dad run the family farm. After graduation from Fishers High School he married Betty Jo King and they established their own farm. In addition to farming, he had his own earth moving construction business. As a boy he was always fascinated with building model airplanes, and this interest led to his decision to build the Indianapolis Metropolitan Airport on his farm in July 1960. After developing a very successful airport business, including maintenance and storage hangars, aircraft sales and service, flight training school, and restaurant, the entire business and property was taken over by the city of Indianapolis in 1967. He would go on to other business ventures and spend various times in second homes in California, Montana, and North Carolina. He also loved to play his Wurlitzer and Hammond organs, and work in his lawn and gardens. Just the day before he passed away he was frustrated that he was not physically able to take care of his normally well groomed lawn and flower beds.
David was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters Violet Jeffery, Eva Mae Stocke, and Virginia Kinsey; wife Betty Jo; son Marcus David; grandson Nathan Gatewood; and granddaughter Sara Gatewood. He is survived by two sisters, Lucille Nordell and Patricia Karsell; his sons Stanley, Jeff, and Jason; daughters Jane Quinn and Lisa Thompson; grandsons Dan Gatewood, Ian Williams, and Peter Williams; granddaughters Julie Morris, Brittany Gatewood, Rachel Gatewood, Abby Gatewood, Lilly Thompson, and Eva Thompson; and great-granddaughters Chloe Gatewood, Madison Morris, McKayla Morris, and Avaleigh Heldman.
A memorial service will be held at Randall & Roberts Fishers Mortuary on Friday, July 18, at 1:00 PM. Visitation will be held at the mortuary preceding the service, from 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM.
