Charles Sylvester, 85, a lifelong resident of Noblesville, died Monday, September 26, 2011 at Riverview Hospital following a short illness. He was born on June 10, 1926 in Hamilton County, IN, the son of Charles Franklin and Audrey (Goettle) Sylvester.
He was a loving husband and father who reveled in his grandchildren. Charles served in the US Army in World War II under General George Patton, fought in the Battle of the Bulge and was among the first forces to liberate Germany. Although the Army wanted him to attend Officer's Training, Charles returned to Noblesville and married Judith Ann Pickett. Charles was very proud to have been a Noblesville Fireman from 1948 until 1971. In 1966 he was honored with the Distinguished Service Award from the US Jaycees for his service and bravery as a fireman.
He also worked at Talbert's Lumberyard for many years and following his retirement from the Noblesville Fire Department, he worked at the Noblesville Junior High School. With his wife, Judy, he owned Charlie's Bait and Tackle Shop, which was the favorite place for fishermen from all over central Indiana for several years. Beyond his work, Charles was an avid carpenter and woodworker and his wooden works of art have adorned the Noblesville Court House Square at Christmastime and in the homes of his many friends and family.
Charles is survived by his wife of 64 years, Judy; his children Nancy (Joe) Hernandez and Michael (Michele) Sylvester; grandchildren Steven (Donyelle) Sylvester, Mark (Tiffany) Hernandez, Jason Hernandez, and Griffin Sylvester; great-grandchildren Peyton Sylvester and Alex Hernandez; his sister, Vivian Haworth; and brothers Robert (Naomi) Sylvester and James Sylvester.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Alice Lewis.
Services will be held at 3:00PM on Saturday, October 1, 2011 at Randall & Roberts Funeral Home, 1150 Logan Street in Noblesville, with visitation beginning at 1:00PM prior to the service. Rev. Bill Medlin will officiate. Burial will be at Crownland Cemetery in Noblesville.
