David Lee Roush, 79, of Noblesville, passed away Friday, October 2, 2015 in Florida. David was born April 5, 1936 in Noblesville, the son of Howard and Dorothy Roush. He had an older brother, John Howard and has an older sister, Barbara Jean Jennings who resides in Noblesville, IN.
He grew up in Noblesville, where in his youth worked as a paperboy for nine years and a farmhand for ten years. He won the Hamilton County 4-H championship in gardening and exhibited at the Indiana State Fair. He attended Noblesville High School where he lettered two years each in football and track and field. He was President of the school's chapter of the National Honor Society.
In 1954-55, he attended Purdue University and then received an appointment to attend the West Point Military Academy where he graduated in 1959. He obtained Master's Degrees from The American University and also from Boston University. He had a love for education.
David served in the Infantry Armor and Ordnance branches, with 15 years of active duty and more than 15 years in the U.S. Army Reserves. He served three full combat tours of duty in Viet Nam. Only eight cadets from the West Point Class of 1959 share that distinction. At the end of the Viet Nam war, he was the Post Defense Officer at the Long Binh Installation, commanding some 2500 US/ARVN troops. He retired in 1996 after a 36 year military career.
His Military Career Highlights: Served on Special-General-Joint-Combined staffs. Organizations included Military Assistance Command Viet Nam (J-3), U.S. Army Viet Nam (G-3 and G-1-G-4 Field Army Briefer), 24th Army Corps (G-3), USAREUR and 7th Army (G-3, G-1), U.S. Army Europe (G-3), Central Army Group, Europe (G-5 combined staff). Third U.S. Army (G-3), First U.S. Army (G-3), and United States Army Forces Command (G-8), Force Development and also attended the Army Air War College and graduated from Ranger School.
In 1959 he married Marilyn Mae Gard, from Warner Robins, Georgia, where her father was stationed at Robins Air Force Base. They were married for 19 years and had three children, Roxsanna, David and Sherri. They shared a love for travel, enjoyed military life and traveling abroad and throughout the U.S. After their divorce in 1978, he then worked as an insurance agent for both Prudential and John Hancock. He also worked 17 years in the aerospace industry with AAA Engineering and Drafting Company out of Utah at Robins AFB, General Dynamics in Fort Worth, Loral Electronics Systems, Gulfstream Aerospace, and Lockheed Martin - in a variety of disciplines and assignments.
He did volunteer work for Junior Achievers for six years at General Dynamics in Fort Worth and over eight years with the Boy Scouts of America.
He retired and lived happily in Englewood, Florida for almost 20 years. He was BIOMAN for the West Point Class of 1959 Yearbook and also volunteered his time with Boy Scouts of America. He was a member of the Grace Methodist Church in Venice, FL,.
He is survived by: his daughters, Roxsanne Roush and Sherri Furtney from Warner Robins, GA , his son, David Roush from Cumming, GA, his sister, Barbara Jean Jennings from Noblesville, IN, 6 grandchildren, and six great grandchildren, all who live in Georgia.
The rewards of his life were a relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ, a very loving and supportive family, and many travel opportunities within the USA and abroad.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 7, 2015 from 1:00pm to 2:00pm at Randall & Roberts Funeral Center, 1685 Westfield Road in Noblesville, with a gravedside service following at 2:30 pm at Crownland Cemetery in Noblesville.
