Dorothy Brown Wimmer passed away on April 22, 2008 in Waco, TX after a brief illness. She was 83 and a lifelong Indiana resident. Born in Greensburg on February 15, 1925 to Lucian H. and Jessie Applegate Brown, she was raised on the family farm along the Flatrock River near St. Paul. Dorothy earned three degrees from Ball State University (BSN, 1948; BS, 1962; MS, 1968). Between 1948 and 1963 she was a nurse practitioner, serving as Head of Obstetric Nursing at Rush Memorial Hospital in Rushville throughout the 1950s. After completing a degree in elementary education, she joined the New Castle Community School Corporation in 1963, teaching third and fourth grades at Sunnyside and Wilbur Wright Elementary Schools until her retirement in 1982.
Dorothy M. Brown and John H. Wimmer were married in 1948 at Star Baptist Church in Decatur County, and subsequently resided over the years in Milroy, New Castle, and Carmel. They were active in United Methodist churches in each of these communities and were faithful choir members for nearly 50 years. Mrs. Wimmer was preceded in death by her husband in 2000. They were married 53 years.
Dorothy was known for her devotion to her husband and family, as well as for her faith in God and support of the church. She had a sweet and gentle spirit, a lively sense of humor, and compassion for others. She maintained a lifelong love of learning, especially in medicine, Indiana history, genealogy, and music. She will be remembered by many for her quiet acts of kindness and friendship.
She is survived by three children and their spouses, Ann and Randy Tilton of Winter Garden, FL, John R. Wimmer and Jan Blaising of Zionsville, IN, and Carol and David VanHoose of Waco, TX; and four grandsons, Ryan and Stephen Tilton, Michael VanHoose, and David Blaising-Wimmer.
