Gene Dorland, a remarkable individual whose life was marked by compassion, dedication, and a genuine spirit, passed away on June 24th, 2024, at the age of 81. His legacy will forever resonate with those who knew him. Gene was a long-time resident of Fairport, New York but moved to Fishers, Indiana in 2023.
Gene was born in 1942 to Everett and Jessamine Dorland. He grew up alongside his siblings, Patricia Dorland, Suzanne (James) Harney and Christopher (Stacy) Dorland and was predeceased by his brother, Charles Dorland. Gene graduated from Edison Tech High School in 1962 and later attended Alfred State College before enlisting in the United States Air Force where, from 1964-1968, he was stationed at Grand Forks Air Force Base as a Nuclear Weapons Technician.
His impact extended far beyond his family. As an entrepreneur he started his own transformer manufacturing company called COIL-LER. He then became a partner in the East Rochester firm Spectracom, where he played a pivotal role in coordinating 911 communication systems. His work in the field of time synchronization remains influential to this day. Gene brought authenticity and equality to his interactions, treating everyone with respect and kindness.
Outside of work, Gene pursued his passions with enthusiasm. He enjoyed radio-controlled flying, geocaching, and fishing. NASCAR races held a special place in his heart, and he relished every moment spent watching them. He actually got to take his Corvette to Watkins Glen International Race Track and drive the course. Gene’s gentle spirit was evident in his compassion for those facing adversity. He never hesitated to lend a helping hand to those in need. Whether it was a neighbor, a friend, or a stranger, Gene’s generosity knew no bounds.
Gene is survived by his college sweetheart and devoted wife of 59 years, Frances. Their enduring love and partnership were an inspiration to all. He also leaves behind two children, Brian (Christina) Dorland and Jennifer (Jason) Hagen. His five grandchildren, Katherine and Kara Dorland, and Davis, Zachary and Adam Hagen, were a source of immense pride.
Gene was always up for a challenge and enjoyed finding ways to help others through their own burdens. Even as his health turned, he maintained a positive outlook prioritizing the comfort of those around him.
As we mourn Gene’s passing, let us honor his memory by continuing his legacy of kindness, empathy, and selflessness. Gene will be dearly missed but forever remembered as a beacon of compassion and goodwill. May his soul rest in peace.
There will be a family graveside celebration of life on Monday, July 1st in Fishers, IN.
In lieu of flowers contributions can be made in Gene's memory to the American Cancer Society, PO Box 6704, Hagerstown, MD 21741 (https://www.cancer.org).
