Eva Irene Horn Smith, 92, of Noblesville, passed away on Monday, September 1, 2014 at Harbour Manor Care Center.
Born the fifth child of Rev. Roby and Estella (White) Rasnake on May 23, 1922, in Russell County, VA. She lived her childhood in Virginia but after graduating from Gary High School, VA, she came to Indiana to live with her aunt and uncle. It was then, she met Harry Horn, whom she married August 30, 1942. Living in Noblesville, they had five children, Harriet (Barry) Green, Rev. Larry (Martha) Horn, Peggy (Tim) Haskett, Jerry (Barbara) Horn, all of Noblesville, and Rev. Terry (Cynthia) Horn, of Jacksonville, FL. She and Harry welcomed Sylvia (Tom) Weaver, of Noblesville, and Mike Jackson, of Fortville, into their home as their own after Irene's sister and her husband passed away in 1957. After Harry passed away in 1984, she met and married James C. Smith, of Beech Grove, in 1988.
Besides being a homemaker, Irene worked for Standard Grocery Co., the Veterans Administration, and after 20 years, she retired from the accounting department at Best Lock Corp. Irene was a great cook, and was always entertaining family and friends in her home. She was a state finalist in the Pillsbury Bake Off. Being a Christian, her church activities as a member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church were very important to her. Her activites included Lay Leader, teaching Sunday School, Bible Study leader, and singing in the choir. She and Harry joined that congregation in 1949. They both went on Lay Witness Missions associated with the Methodist Church. She also served as Prayer Coordinator for Christian Service International organization.
As an active member of the Noblesville Senior Citizens, she enjoyed singing with the "Sing-Alongs." In 1991, she was chosen as "Older Woman of the Year" an award given by the Central Indiana Council on Aging. In 1995, Irene received the "Young at Heart Award" and "Hamilton County's Most Outstanding Senior Citizen." She volunteered for Med-Alert at Riverview Health, was an avid reader, and enjoyed walking, in which she received a Presidential Sports Award from President Ronald Regan in 1998. She also enjoyed gardening, home decorating, and was a wiz at home construction and painting. She made many quilts for her grandchildren, and loved to travel. Among her various travels, were two trips to Israel, it was on one of those trips, she met her husband, Jim Smith.
She has lived the last few years at Harbour Manor in Noblesville, where she has made many friends of both the staff and the residents.
She is survived by all of her children; 17 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great-grandchildren; sister, Naydne (Carl) White; brothers, Raymond (Maggie) Rasnake and Carl Rasnake, all of Virginia; and many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Harry Horn; second husband, Jim Smith; two sisters; and three brothers.
Services will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, September 8, 2014 at Emmanuel United Methodist Church, 16000 Cumberland Road, in Noblesville. Visitation will be held from 2:00 pm until 5:00 pm on Sunday, September 7, 2014 at Randall & Roberts Funeral Home, 1150 Logan Street, in Noblesville. Burial will be at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens in Indianapolis.
