Grace Susan Akers died April 12, 2015, after an extended illness. She was 16 years old.
Grace loved playing her guitar, purple and pink, listening to Elvis and Patsy Cline, watching Bear in the Big Blue House, visiting her favorite turtles and birds at the parks and trails around her home, and horses and butterflies and Flik and Atta. She worked to teach the world about inclusion for people with disabilities, and she lived her life as a reminder about the message that "Everyone belongs." She promoted kindness and courage and tolerance, and she was a source of inspiration to people all over the world.
She was loved deeply by her parents, Jennifer and Joe, and her grandparents, her aunts and uncles, her cousins, her friends, and her dog Molly and cat Elvis.
Her family requests that her life be honored by paying it forward with a "Gift of Grace" by letting the world know that Grace was here and made a difference. If you'd like to make a donation in her honor, they ask that people consider Family Voices Indiana, Make-A-Wish America, Give Kids The World or another cause dear to you. Or, volunteer for Best Buddies or Special Olympics. Or, simply be kind to one another. Share your "Gift of Grace" and spread the love and kindness Grace radiated every day to help those who need it the most.
