Gregg George Thomas

After putting up one hell of a fight against cancer, Gregg George Thomas passed away on Friday, February 24, 2017 at Community North Hospital in Indianapolis.
Gregg was born on October 6, 1953 in New Jersey. He grew up on Townsend St. in Milltown, a home that his parents resided in until they passed a few years ago. Gregg was an adventurous kid and if there was mischief to get into, he found a way to get into it. When his parents were alive, they would share stories that would have the family cracking up. Growing up he was extremely close to his older brother Scott and this special bond continued well into adulthood.
Gregg's adventurous spirit led him to his first career as an Oceanographer at NOAA. He spent years traveling all over the world, visiting exotic and remote destinations that most people never heard of. He crossed the Equator on multiple occasions and visited six out of the seven continents. During his time at sea, Gregg found one of his true passions, fishing. In fact, if you called his voicemail today you would still hear "I'm out fishing right now, the Wahoo are biting and nothing else really matters...". Considering he currently lives in Indiana where the nearest Wahoo is a few thousand miles away, this always gave his family and friends a chuckle.
Even though his travels took him all over the world, you could always count on Gregg to find his way home during the holidays to spend time with the family he loved, his mother, Millie, his father Don, his brother Scott, sister-in-law Chris, niece and nephew Kimmie and Scottie and his cousins, aunts and uncles.
After retiring from NOAA, Gregg pursued a completely new and exciting career at the Bluegreen Corporation where he worked in Marketing. His extensive travels, incredible personality and sharp intellect made him a natural in this role and he loved what he did. This new adventure took him away from sunny Florida and brought him to Indiana. His family wasn't sure if he would be able to trade in the surf for the snow, but he did and, in the process, built a wonderful life with his "Indy family".
An avid horse racing fan, you could find Gregg and his best friend Todd at the track most weekends having a great time betting the ponies. When his father was alive, they would chat on the phone multiple times a week, placing bets, comparing notes and sharing in the excitement of recent wins. It was always an epic event watching him, his father and his brother at the track together. They'd watch the live races, go inside and somehow simultaneously follow races at multiple tracks on TV and find time to place bets in between.
In addition to horse racing, Gregg loved sports, particularly football. His team was the Dallas Cowboys and he followed them for many years. In fact, he was a season ticket holder at one point and would travel to Dallas to watch them live (much to the dismay of his father who was a die-hard NY Giants fan).
Gregg was the type of guy who could engage in conversation with just about anybody and, within a short period of time, turn a stranger into a friend. People naturally gravitated towards him and those that knew him loved him. There will definitely be a void without him here, but we know he is together again with his parents and brother.
