Henry Fredrick Schmidgall, 93, passed away May 29th, 2011 in Noblesville, Indiana. He was born in Indianapolis on December 24. 1917, to German-born Fredrick Henry and Rosa (Sick) Schmidgall.
Following his apprenticeship, Henry was employed in the printing industry in Indianapolis for 40 years, retiring December 31, 1979.
A World War II veteran, he served in campaigns in Normandy, the Ardennes, and the Rhineland and also with the liberation of France. A machine operator and rifle marksman, he was awarded the American Defense Ribbon, EAME Theater Ribbon with four Bronze Stars, the Good Conduct Medal and the Purple Heart. He received his honorable discharge from the military service Oct. 5, 1945 and later was presented a certificate from French Consul General Dominique Dachert, expressing gratitude for the sacrifices made by our Allies.
Henry continued his friendships with other veterans at the VFW and the American Legion near his residence in Speedway before moving to Noblesville.
Survivors include his wife Marie (Donahue) Schmidgall, whom he married July 3, 1954; a niece, Rosa Sharon Hill of Florida; a nephew, Ted Rowland, Noblesville; and two great-nephews, Dane Rowland of Cicero and Dean Rowland, Noblesville.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Fredrick Schmidgall Jr., Julius Schmidgall, Oscar Schmidgall and Phillip Schmidgall; two sisters, Catherine Schmidgall Hill and Blanche Schmidgall Hendricks.
Friends are welcome to join the family on Thursday, June 2nd at 10:30 am at the Concordia Cemetery in Indianapolis. A special military honor guard will be part of the service.
