James Frank O’Meara
Beloved husband, father, brother and grandfather, Jim O’Meara, 82 of Fishers, Indiana passed away September 3, 2024. He was born in South Bend (beneath the shadow of the Golden Dome) in 1942. He attended St. Joseph High School and was on the regional winning basketball team. He had a terrific memory for names of faces including his high school teachers and classmates.
He served in the army after graduating from Michigan State University where he met his future wife, Cheryl. They were married for 55 years.
Starting their family on the southside of Indianapolis, they moved to Carmel where Jim continued to work, coach, referee, and then became an active member of the American Legion in Fishers, Indiana. He was the Finance Officer for many years and considered the success of the St. Jude golf tournament one of greatest achievements. Jim was a proud United States Veteran. Having served in the army, he considered part of his legacy to be what he gave back to veterans in need.
An active father, Jim followed his children on their adventures from music to sports and often had a carload of kids traveling to events. He and Cheryl sacrificed many hours to allow their children to follow their dreams.
Jim was an avid sports fan. He loved coaching and refereeing and faithfully supported the Fighting the Irish, or whatever team his children and grandchildren were on.
He had a passion for cooking and sharing with other. Their group of friends celebrated many amazing meals together. His retirement brought more service opportunities including volunteering at school, mostly in the cafeteria, and in the classroom. He also continued to work for veterans and their needs.
He is preceded in death by his mother, Cecelia; his father, Floyd; sisters Lorraine (Jim), Carmen (Bud), Rosina, Naomi, Mary (Bernie), Irene, Delores (Richard), Phyllis (Lewis), Charlene (John), and Beverly (Ed); many brothers-in-law and son, Ryan.
He is survived by his wife, Cheryl, his daughter Elizabeth Ahlgrim (Bob), grandchildren Megan, Robert, and Colin, sister Carolyn Schlundt (Wayne), brother Herb, and sister Estell Modjeski (Mo) as well as a large extended family and a wider circle of friends.
He was a true Irishman and leaves behind a legacy of service, love and friendship.
