James Michael Slaughter

James Michael Slaughter, 73, of Greenfield, passed away on Friday, January 24, 2025 at IU Health North Hospital in Carmel. He was born on March 11, 1951 to James Earl and Mary (Troy) Slaughter in Richmond, Indiana.

In his early adulthood, Jim ran crews for Electro Painters in multiple locations in the United States prior to opening his own electro painting business. Later in life, he worked as a boat mechanic at Jarco for many years until he retired. Jim was a man of many and varied interests. He loved music. In his youth, he frequented concerts, collected records and played guitar. In his later years, he could be found (or more appropriately heard) enjoying his collection loudly at home or in the detached garage of the lake condo. He also enjoyed boating, riding motorcycles in his younger years, shooting guns, and was a member of the NRA. Jim liked painting model cars, tinkering with any electric gadget, and playing with remote control vehicles. He was an avid reader and loved history, particularly anything to do with World War II. He enjoyed doing the crossword puzzle in the newspaper every day. Jim was a man of deep faith, his Bible never far from his side.

Jim’s family was the center of his world, and his deep, abiding love for them never ending. He loved his family and friends with a quiet strength and palpable presence, never hesitating to lend a helping hand when something was needed. He had such a big heart. His generosity extended beyond family and friends. If he saw a stranger in need, he also did not hesitate to help them as well. He was a man of few words, but if you were close enough to hear, you would enjoy his dry sense of humor. He could deliver short, witty responses that would surprise and delight you, often leading to bouts of laughter.

In his lifetime, Jim touched so many lives. He will be deeply missed.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Marilyn Slaughter; daughter, Jamie Slaughter; sister, Ruthie (Chuck) Ezell; sister-in-law, Cindy Slaughter; brothers-in-law, John (Marilyn) McDonough and John Kopatz; several nieces and nephews; and several great nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, James "Jimmy" Eric Slaughter; brother, John Slaughter; and sister-in-law, Maureen Kopatz.
