James Fisher Stout, 78, Carmel, passed away Wednesday, December 16, 2009 in Indianapolis. He was born March 7, 1931 in Nashville, TN to Harold James and Gladys Joy (Fisher) Stout.
Jim was a veteran of the Army Signal Corps. He attended Northwestern University and South Dakota State University and graduated with a BS in Electrical Engineering.
He went to work for Westinghouse Electric Corporation in their Industrial Sales Dept. and received several top sales awards.
Jim was reared in South Dakota and loved pheasant hunting. His dad owned and operated Stout Drug Company on Main Street in Aberdeen, SD. He also loved fishing, taught each grandchild how to fish, and spent hours on the dock with them. Other hobbies were bowling, golfing, and being an avid reader. He made many pieces of furniture for the family especially his grandchildren.
Jim loved pheasants, Belgian Brownings, the smell of gun oil, duck and goose hunting at Sand Lake, SD, fishing anywhere, commenting back (loudly, in earnest, with passion) in the family room at liberal commentators on TV, his grandchildren, his home town of Aberdeen, SD, truth, honesty, integrity, family values, American traditions, those who served their country in the armed forces, the song "Amazing Grace" by the Royal Scottish Dragoon Guards, "The Saints" by just about anybody, the Chicago Bears and the Chicago Cubs (at game time Jim would routinely quote Ernie Banks- "It's a beautiful day for a ball game, let's play two!"),honor, loyalty, duty, family and, in particular, his family.
Jim loved ham and cheese sandwiches, brewed iced tea in "his" mug, a rotisserie roast done just right, charcoal, Yorkshire pudding, fresh cut grass, any crossword puzzle, a Hostess fruit pie, a flag pole with the flag flown at full mast, Sunday chicken on the grill, a good sports story where the impossible is overcome by human striving, a neat work shop, radio broadcasts, the Greatest Generation, true friendship, his special pets (Jiggs, Trigger and Maggie), The conservativism of the Founding Fathers, a well designed, planned and executed project, and a dumb joke.
Most of all, in his life, Jim loved his wife of 56 years, Bonnie Rose (Glasner) Stout, to whom he was ever faithful. In addition to his wife, he is survived by daughter, Jaymie Gatewood; son, Michael Grover Stout; daughter, Julie Ann Stout; grandchildren, Michael Grover Stout Jr., Rachel Anne Gatewood, Meghan Scott Stout, Katherine Lee Stout; and several cousins.
Jim is preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Nathan James Gatewood; and granddaughter, Sara Ashley Gatewood.
He died in the hope of the Resurrection of the body, the forgiveness of sins and the life everlasting. His suffering is over. He is home, where every tear is wiped from the face of the believer. We will miss him.
Services will be held on Tuesday, December 22, 2009 at 11:00AM at Cross & Crown Lutheran Church, 5233 E. 79th St, Indianapolis, with Pastor Mark Wilhelm officiating. There will be a visitation beginning at 10:00AM immediately prior to the service.
