God gently took John Grey Carey, 76, a lifetime resident of Noblesville, on Monday, September 3, 2012, at Millers of Chesterfield. He was born February 15, 1936 in Hamilton County, IN. He is "tickling the ivories" in Heaven and what a glorious day it is now that he can rest in our Savior's protective arms. He is sharing that wonderful humor and his jokes with his loved ones.
John lived most of his life in Noblesville growing up as an only child on the family farm located on River Road, and his adult life in the little red house on 10th Street surrounded with flowers and the sign in the front, "Piano Lessons". For the past few years, John resided in Crown Pointe Assisted Living located in Anderson where he continued to enjoy his music and friends. In March, John's health deteriorated, and he entered Millers Merry Manor in Chesterfield.
John graduated from Noblesville High School and worked as a bookkeeper in a local business for many years. He served in the United States Army from February 6, 1959, to his honorable medical discharge in March 30, 1961. Music was always his passion, and he was known to many Noblesville residents as the "Piano Man". He taught piano and played in churches in the Indianapolis and Noblesville area throughout most of his adult life. When John moved into Millers last March, his beloved baby grand piano went with him, and it shall remain there in his memory.
Although John never married, he did take joy in his many friends and the local Noblesville residents. So many people from his Huntington Bank tellers, the businesses on the square, the Court House staff, and Annie Cook, his realtor, went out of their way to help John. His dear friends, Mary and Curt Lake, were loyal and faithful friends to the end. His dear friend, Tony Carson, was a faithful friend right up to his own death soon after John entered Millers. During the past few years, Christina McCann, his social worker, was always there for John. John's nurse, Susie Kendall, at Crown Pointe Assisted Living was a treasured friend in his later years. Dr. Robert Smith, Linda and staff were always there to help John. Since January, St. John's Hospice has been an intricate part of John's life, and his nurse, Christian Arvin, was a gifted and valued caregiver. John's attorney, Tamatha Stevens and her staff of Stevens and Associates in Indianapolis, provided services to protect John. The members of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Oaklandon were also most faithful friends.
John is survived by his first cousin, Susan Todd (J. David Jr.) Fountain; his second cousins, J.D. (Theresa) Fountain III and Elizabeth Fountain (Mathew) Troha; and his third cousins. Bryce, Josephina, Alexander and Natalia.
He was preceded in death by his beloved mother, Marie Todd Carey; his father, John Irvin Carey; his uncle, Thurl D. Todd; his aunt, Geneva E. Todd; and his beloved step-mother, Vernice Carey.
Services will be held at 10:00AM on Wednesday, September 5, 2012 at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church in Noblesville with visitation beginning at 9:00AM immediately prior to the service. Rev. Christopher Shocklee will officiate. Interment will be at Crownland Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. John's Hospice in Anderson, IN.
