John Alton "Al" Hoard, 90, of Westfield, passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, July 17, 2024. He was born on June 9, 1934 to John Milton and Delores Emma (Shirey) Hoard in Westfield, Indiana.
Al was a 1952 graduate of Westfield High School where he quarterbacked the high school football team. He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force from 1957-1961, and enjoyed flying small aircraft for several years. Al married Nedra Anne White on September 2, 1961. For over 40 years, Al had his own construction company and enjoyed woodworking and making stained glass. He loved fishing, especially in Canada, Florida, and at Brookville Lake. An avid sports fan, Al followed the Colts, Pacers, and Purdue. He also enjoyed watching TV westerns and reading Louis L'Amour books. Most of all, he loved his family. We looked forward to our family get-togethers, and especially loved Al's homemade noodles, dinner rolls and pies.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Nedra Hoard; children, Neal (Beth) Hoard, Craig (Cindy) Hoard, April (Bill) Frye, and Todd (Beth) Hoard; grandchildren, Amanda Frye (Will Stock), Marcella (Charles) Scheller, Elliott Hoard, Mattie Hoard, Henry Hoard, and John Hoard; and his great-grandchildren, Jackson Stock, CoraRose Stock, and William Grant Scheller.
In addition to his parents, Al was preceded in death by his brother, Clifton Lee Hoard; and his sisters, Norma Jean Mondragon and Linda Lou Messick.
Visitation will be from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm on Saturday, July 27, 2024 at Westfield Friends Church, 324 S. Union Street, in Westfield. A memorial service with military honors will follow at 6:00 pm at the church, with Pastor Joshua Cortez and Pastor Nancy Lafferty officiating.
At Al's request, his body was donated to the IU School of Medicine. He will be interred at Summit Lawn Cemetery in Westfield at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Quaker Haven Camp, 111 EMS D16C Ln, Syracuse, IN 46567 (https://www.quakerhaven.com/giving-back); or to your favorite charity.
