Joseph F. "Jay" Scher

Joseph F. “Jay” Scher, 92 of THE RESERVE, Fishers, went home to Heaven on Tuesday, August 3, 2021 after a short stay at IU Saxony, Fishers.  He was born March 14, 1929 to Joseph and E. Mildred Scher in Huntington, Indiana.

Joe graduated from Pennville (Indiana) High School in 1947.  He then earned a Bachelor's and a Master's degree in Business Education from Ball State University and a Master's degree in Counseling and Guidance from Purdue University.

Joe strongly believed in the power of education.  He recognized the value of collaboration and sought to involve all people in the circle of student learning. Joe spent 16 years teaching high school business courses in Winchester, Avilla, and Elkhart.  The next 24 years Joe served as a public school administrator in Elkhart, Crown Point, East Allen County (New Haven) and MSD Warren Township (Marion County). After his public school retirement, Joe worked with Educational Services Company, Inc. (Indianapolis).  He was actively involved in and served on the Board of the Indiana Association of School Business Officials (IASBO) and the local and state Parent-Teacher Association (PTA).

Joe embraced the love of God, family, friendships and those he met along life’s journey.  He had joy in his heart and expressed it to others with his positive attitude, a smile, a compliment, words of kindness and encouragement, a listening ear, his generosity and by offering a helping hand where needed. Throughout Joe’s career, others sought out his advice and wisdom, often asking him to serve as their mentor.  He enjoyed volunteering for community outreach agencies – most recently at the Fishers United Methodist Church Food Pantry and soon after moving to Fishers at The Shepherd Center of Hamilton County.

Joe had a passion for music. He sang bass in church choirs and was known to hum and whistle while at work.  Joe had an uncanny ability to recall names and dates; ranging from New York Yankees stats, to former students; and most of all, special dates of family and friends to whom he’d send specifically chosen Hallmark cards with a hand-written note.

Joe is survived by his children, Joi (Brad) Jimison of Elkhart, Mark (Kris) Scher of Mishawaka, Amy (David) Reimschisel of Leo, Jill (Patrick) Mohan of Elkhart, and stepson Michael (Rhonda Hobbs) Stavropulous of Carmel; grandchildren, Corey (Tammy) Scher, Katyana (Jeff) Kaminer, Leah (Ian) Heuer, Jama Reimschisel, Shaye Mohan, and Kacie Mohan; several great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Suzanne (Waltz) Scher; and nieces, Jody Harland and Jennifer Dwyer.

In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy (Stavropulous) Scher; brother, Norbert D. Scher; and grandson, Forrest K. Howard.

Celebration of Joe’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m., with visitation beginning at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 4, 2021 at Fishers United Methodist Church, 9691 East 116th Street, Fishers, Indiana.  Private services will be held at Sunset Memory Gardens Cemetery in Kokomo.

In lieu of flowers, please consider honoring Joseph “Jay” with a memorial contribution to the Food Pantry of Fishers United Methodist Church, 9691 East 116th Street, Fishers, IN 46037.
