Joseph William Richard Merkle, 91, of Noblesville, passed away on Tuesday, January 9, 2018 at Riverview Health. He was born on November 26, 1926, the youngest of 6 children of Frank and Teresa (Meitz) Merkle in Chicago, Illinois.
Joe proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. He settled in Fort Wayne where he worked at Allen Products, Inc., eventually becoming Vice President and part owner of the company. An entrepreneur who owned several businesses, he ended his business career as the owner of Fort Wayne Dairy Equipment before retiring in Noblesville. Joe and his wife, Lori, wintered in Mesa, AZ where they played golf and enjoyed family and friends. In his later years, his passions were cooking and following the stock market, but most importantly, spending time with his family and grandkids.
He is survived by his wife, Lorraine Merkle; children, Patricia Merkle Ohlendorf, Mark J.R. Merkle (Sue Stemen), and Barbara Merkle Horn (William); and grandchildren, Charles, Alex, Arin, April, Parker, Victoria and Paige.
In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by his siblings, Rudy, Frank, Eva, Mary and Steve.
Mass will be held at 2:30 pm on Friday, January 12, 2018 at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, 410 South Pearl Street in Cicero, with visitation one hour prior in the chapel. Rev. Dale W. Ehrman will officiate.
The Merkle family has entrusted Randall & Roberts Funeral Homes with Joe's care.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, 410 South Pearl Street, Cicero, IN 46034.
