Julia Lillian (Kategianis) Mekuly, 88 Noblesville, died January 25, 2012, at St. Vincent Hospice, Indianapolis. She was born July 13, 1923, in Chicago, the daughter of Steve and Stella (Beneos) Kategianis. She was the second of five children brought up in a very strict Greek Orthodox family. Her family owned and operated three restaurants in Chicago.
Mrs. Mekuly worked as a stenographer for the American Can Company in Chicago, Illinois and as a Sales Associate for Marshall Fields in Park Forest, Illinois. She retired after 23 years of service at Fields. Mrs. Mekuly attended Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church. She also was a member of St. Michael the Archangel Parish in Sarasota, Florida when spending winters there. She was a past president of the Daughters of Penelope in Olympia Fields, Illinois.
She is survived by two sons, Stephen (Ellen) Mekuly and Greg (Cathy) Mekuly; a daughter, Judy (Gene) Kelley; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
She was married for 63 years to Steve Mekuly, whom she had known since they were five years old. He precedes her in death. In addition to her husband, she was also preceded in death by her son, Gary Mekuly.
Calling will be from 10am to noon Saturday, February 11, 2012 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, 14598 Oak Ridge Road, Carmel, Indiana with a mass immediately following. Randall & Roberts Funeral Home, Noblesville, is handling the arrangements.
