Loren worked in his field of chemistry in Michigan, Ohio and, until his death, in Environmental Services for Eli Lilly Company. He also taught "Introduction To Chemistry" at Ivy Tech Community College in Indianapolis where he was given the "Outstanding Adjunct Faculty Award for 2009-2010", an honor to which he was elected by both teachers and students in the School of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
Loren was a man who went the extra mile in his work and in service to others. He served as assistant scoutmaster when his sons were in Boy Scouts. He traveled with them to Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico in 1990 where he spent twelve days backpacking in the mountains with a dozen scouts. He was a counselor for Boy Scout Merit badges, including one for chemistry.
He loved God, nature, hiking and photography, using his skills to capture many beautiful images with his camera.
