Margaret Jane 'Peggy' Barr of Albuquerque, NM passed away at her home on Sunday, June 14, 2009. She was 84. Mrs. Barr died of natural causes. A long time resident of Noblesville, IN Mrs. Barr had moved to Albuquerque in 2008. She was succeeded in death by her husband Jerry Barr formerly of Public Service Indiana.
She is survived by her seven children; daughters Vickie Willis (Richard) of Denver, CO and Lisa Moss (Keith) of Albuquerque, NM; sons; Mike Barr of Dallas, TX, Phil Barr (Cynthia) of Portland, OR , Chris Barr of Albuquerque, NM, James Barr (Angel) of Dallas, TX, and Thomas Barr (Jamie) of Albuquerque, NM; seventeen grandchildren, four great grandchildren; a brother, James Velten (Marie) of Fort Wayne, IN and sisters Agnes Adwell of Sun City, AZ and Alice Penrod of Lafayette IN.
Peggy was born in Lafayette, IN on July 5, 1924 to Edward and Blanche Velten. She was a graduate of St. Francis Catholic High School of Lafayette. She married Jerry Barr on February 26, 1949 and they made their home in Indianapolis, IN. Theirs was a strong and loving marriage of forty three years. Two daughters and five sons followed. When asked how they succeeded in raising such a good and large family, their consistent reply was, "Keep them tired." Peggy taught her children the value of family, responsibility and hard work which she learned from her parents. Mrs. Barr was preceded in death by her parents and sister Mary Clodjeaux of Lafayette IN.
A lifetime homemaker, Peggy also worked outside the home. She began her working career as a candy store attendant at Union Station in Lafayette during World War II. She also was a secretary at Alcoa Aluminum in Lafayette and in her leisure time acted in Little Theater. In later years she was a school secretary in New Castle, IN. Consistently those she worked for and with commented that they knew she cared. Her children always knew they were loved and that they were the most important thing in her life. Sports were a focus of her family's life, and she was an avid supporter of whatever activities her children were involved in. She especially developed a strong love for Purdue University and its sports programs. In 1997 was presented with the honorary Game Ball at halftime of the Homecoming football game. She also supported the Indianapolis Colts and Pacers and considered it the biggest of treats to attend a game.
Peggy was an active member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church in Noblesville, the League of Women Voters, and a founder of the Greensburg, IN Crisis Pregnancy Hotline.
A Celebration of Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, June 18, 2009 at 10:30AM at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church, with Rev. Richard Doerr and Rev. Jim Bates officiating. Visitation will be Wednesday, June 17 from 4-8PM at Randall & Roberts Funeral Home in Noblesville, with prayer service at 8PM. Burial will be at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens in Indianapolis.
