Martin 'Danks' Francis Leonard, 82, of Fishers, died on January 1, 2011, surrounded by his family. He was born on October 6, 1928 in Galway, Ireland to Francis and Mary Leonard.
Danks received his mechanics certification from W.P. Higgins in Galway. At age 25, he immigrated to Indianapolis. Only 8 days after coming to Indy, he started his career as a mechanic with Kroger. He retired from Kroger after 34 years of service.
Danks enjoyed spending the winters in Theresa's home in Charlotte, NC, and Tom's home in West Palm Beach, Florida. He always loved dancing. He became a wonderful ballroom dancer, taking lessons for many years at Scott's Studio in Broad Ripple. Danks was a true Irishman. He loved family, a good laugh and was never too proud to show tears during a tender moment.
He is survived by six children, Joe (Kathy), John (Rebecca), Frank (Erin), Dan (Debbie), Tom (Robin), Theresa (David); and 17 grandchildren.
There will be an Irish Wake on Tuesday, January 4, 2011, at Randall and Roberts Fishers Mortuary, 12010 Allisonville Road, Fishers, from 4:00PM -7:00PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, January 5, 2011 at St Louis De Montfort Catholic Church in Fishers, at 10:00AM.
