Robert G. Reed, Jr. M.D, 84, Noblesville, passed away Saturday, June 26, 2010 in Noblesville. He was born July 28, 1925 in Indianapolis, Indiana to Robert Gerver and Ruth (Settle) Reed, Sr.
Dr. Reed was a 1944 graduate of Thomas Carr Howe High School. He married Lucille Ann Broeking on June 26, 1948 in Irvington Presbyterian Church; and was a WWII U.S. Army veteran.
He attended Indiana, Rutgers and Butler Universities, graduating with a B.S. degree in 1948 from Indiana University, where he had been a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity. In 1951, he earned his M.D. degree from Indiana University Medical School, and completed his internship at Marion County General Hospital. He practiced medicine as a Family Physician in Plymouth, IN from 1951 to 1967. He then completed a residency in Pathology at the South Bend Medical Foundation and taught at the Notre Dame campus of IU Medical School.
Dr. Reed moved his family to Columbus, IN where he worked and retired as Director of Pathology at Bartholomew County Hospital in 1989. While at Bartholomew County Hospital, he started a program that enabled high school students to shadow doctors or other staff to learn about medical careers.
From 1989 to 2004, Dr. and Mrs. Reed retired to Fairhope, Alabama, where he was a member of Baldwin Senior Travelers volunteered at Meals on Wheels, and served as treasurer of the Trinity Presbyterian Church. He and his wife moved to Noblesville, IN in 2004 to be near their children. There they attended Harbour Shores Church.
He was an active member of the American Medical Society, the Indiana State Medical Association, the Marshall County Medical Society, and the Bartholomew-Brown County Medical Society; was a Fellow of the College of American Pathologists; a member of American Society of Clinical Pathologists and International Association of Pathologists; and past-president of Indiana Association of Pathologists.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Susan Reed Schwab of Indianapolis, Barbara D. (Philip Zazove) Reed of Ann Arbor, MI, Judith Ann Reed of Austin, TX, Patricia (Jim) Reed Paxton of Noblesville, IN, and Michael Robert Reed of Beech Grove, IN; siblings, Alfred (Julie) Reed of Arnold, MD and Mary Jo (Clayton) Reed Wells of Mason, MI; eight grandchildren, Katie, Rebecca, Reed, Michael, Ann, Rebecca, Michael, and David.
A memorial service is being held at 1:00PM on Tuesday, June 29, 2010 at Harbour Shores Church in Noblesville, with Pastor Don Jennings officiating.
