Ruth Waneta Cornett Elder, 87, Noblesville, passed away March 1, 2011. She was born June 17, 1923 in Indianapolis to Uriel and Pearl (Phillips) Cornett. She married Russell E. Elder on August 3, 1941. They had been married for 69 years.
Ruth worked at Naval Avionics Facility, retiring in 1969. She was a graduate of Decatur Central High School, where she had been a cheerleader and President of the Sunshine Society; was President of the Decatur Homemakers Club; a member of IPALCO music choir; secretary at Howe High School for 16 years; and had served as President of all Marion County secretaries for two years. She was also a member of Eastern Star Lynhurst Lodge #515. She was an avid NASCAR race fan and had worked at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for over 30 years.
Russell and Ruth moved to Seminole, Florida in 1969, residing there for 13 years. In 1981 they moved to Leesburg and then, in 1994, they moved back to Indiana and settled in Westbrook Village in Noblesville. They were members of Seminole Christian Church in Florida.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by a sister, Patricia Jo Cornett Freeman; and a great-grandchild, Abbey Mae Simmons.
In addition to her husband, Russell, she is survived by two daughters, Terry Jeanne Elder Roberts Yount and Linda Lee Elder McQueen; a brother, Eugene Phillips Cornett; four grandchildren, Rebecca Lynn Roberts Hines, Carrrie Jane Roberts Simmons, Mark Andrew Roberts and Melissa Lee McQueen Borum; and eight great-grandchildren, Holly, Sarah, Andrew & Ali Simmons, James (J.T.) Thomas, Chaney Rose Borum, and Paige & Katie Hines.
Services will be held Friday, March 4, 2011 at 10:30AM at Randall & Roberts Funeral Home, 1685 Westfield Road, Noblesville, with visitation on Thursday, March 3, 2011 from 5:00PM to 8:00PM at the funeral home. Burial will be at Crownland Cemetery in Noblesville.
