Sheldon James Friedman

Sheldon James Friedman, MD, 80, of Noblesville IN, passed away peacefully Saturday, March 22, 2025 at Riverview Hospital with his family by his side.

Shelly is survived by his amazing wife of 57 years, Cherryl Friedman, MD also of Noblesville, IN; son, Jason (Julie) Friedman of Westfield, IN; daughter, Jaime (Patrick) Turner of Columbia, SC; son, Jeremy Friedman of Summerville, SC; and his grandchildren, Nathan, Ella, Ava, Lily, Andrew, Sophia and Morgan.

Born in Chicago, IL and raised in South Bend, IN, Shelly graduated from South Bend Adams High School in 1963. He attended Indiana University, Bloomington for undergrad and Indiana University School of Medicine for medical school. He met the love of his life, Cherryl, a fellow student at the IU School of Medicine, in Indianapolis. After the birth of Jason, they would permanently plant their roots in Noblesville, IN and soon welcomed Jaime and Jeremy into the family.

Shelly founded both the Cardiology Program at Riverview Hospital in Noblesville, IN and the physician practice Hamilton Heart Cardiology which served communities across Central Indiana. Shelly loved being a Cardiologist and treated patients with dignity, grace and compassion. Shelly’s warm bedside demeanor, loving nature and genuine care for others made a difference in the lives of those he met over the course of his career. He served his community with honor and integrity until he retired in 2013 at age 68.

Shelly had a variety of hobbies that kept him busy when he wasn't with patients or family. A devoted angler, Shelly seized every opportunity to cast his line in the water from places such as South Bend’s St. Joseph’s River as an adolescent, to the lakes of Northwest Ontario and the Floridian hotspots of Charlotte Harbor as an adult and retiree. Shelly had a love for music, particularly blue grass and country. He was a talented guitarist and harmonica player. As a young man, he was known to be the life of a party with the unique songs he wrote spontaneously. His fandom of Notre Dame football and IU basketball remains legendary!

His children were of the upmost importance to him, as he coached Jason and Jeremy in basketball and baseball. He encouraged Jaime’s musical interests in singing and choir. Shelly loved his seven grandchildren and was very present in their lives by supporting their interests and taking in as many of their activities as possible across multiple states.

Shelly’s smile, charisma and warm presence would light up a room. He loved handing out nicknames to those that were close to him. He was a devoted husband, father, Papaw, brother, friend, fisherman, physician and generous human being that will be dearly missed but never forgotten.
