THOMAS LAYNE WIRE SR., 85, was peacefully called into heaven’s glory on New Year’s Eve, December 31, 2024, at his Noblesville, Indiana home, cared for by his wife Sandy of 63 years.
Tom’s life journey began at Harrell Hospital in Noblesville on November 19, 1939, along with his twin brother Ted, born to Rev. Moses and Blanche (Day) Wire. There were two sets of twins which made 12 children, who then produced 50 grandchildren.
Tom is survived by:
Wife Sandra Lee (Young) Wire
Sisters Jewell Jean Eason and Susanna Linda Tucker
Brother Michael M. (Cindy) Wire
Daughter Mary (Jeffery) Passage
Sons Tom Wire Jr. and Jerry (Katie) Wire
Grandsons Nathan (Colleen) Wire and Jack Wire
Granddaughters Ally (Nick) Wright, Tricia Wire, and Chloe Wire
Growing up, Tom enjoyed many sports: football, track, cross country, bowling, and golf. His prodigious achievements were on the gridiron where his Noblesville Millers football teams played 3 remarkable seasons, earning Tom a hallowed place in Noblesville High School’s athletic hall of fame for the team’s 1957 undefeated season.
Tom graduated from Noblesville High School in 1959 and began work at the Sears Roebuck & Co. downtown Indianapolis store in the display department. Tom was a long-time employee of Young Packing Company in Noblesville, where he served as production manager. He also enjoyed a long business relationship with Indianapolis Newspapers (The Star & News) starting as district manager and eventually retiring as owner of his newspaper distribution agency, Media Distribution Services.
Memorable family vacations included Mammoth Cave, Disney World, and Tom’s and Sandy’s 50th wedding anniversary family gathering at Yellowstone National Park in 2011. Tom and Sandy also enjoyed a Mediterranean cruise to Israel. Both Tom Sr. and Tom Jr. ran in the 1986 Chicago Marathon, as part of a family weekend in the Windy City.
At home, Tom enjoyed cozying up to his basement fireplace on cold days and converting his garage into his personalized man cave, which was used for a wood shop, auto repair shop, hanging family photos everywhere, and a lounge for garage parties and to watch his favorite games with family and friends.
Tom was a member of Harbor Shores Church in Cicero, Indiana and a Gideon. His ministry endeavors included distribution of Bibles to schools and nursing homes and neighborhood distribution of Our Daily Bread devotionals.
Tom’s passing was preceded by his parents and 8 brothers and sisters:
Evelyn Fite Fisher
Edith Mosella Teeter Hinshaw
Benjamin Wire
Bonnie Bauer Menefee
David Dean Wire
Darrell Wire
Theodore Lynn Wire
Jacqueline Shelburne
Tom worked hard and played hard. He was easy going and never knew an enemy. Tom was a loving man who will be greatly missed.
As 1 Corinthians 13:13 states, “and the greatest of these is love.”
