Xingjun Li, M.D. Ph.D. , 43 of Fishers, IN passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on Monday, January 12, 2015 at Methodist Hospital, Indianapolis. Xing was born May16, 1971 in Zhenjang, China, the daughter of Xiaoyou and Hemei (Li) Li. In 2008 she married John R. Winkel in Indianapolis. He survives.
Xing received her medical degree in 1994, Shanghai China and continued her education earning a Ph.D. in 2002 in Shanghai, China. She spent three years in a Post-doctoral fellowship at University Joseph Fourier in France.
Xing was currently Assistant Research Professor, Department of Pediatrics at IU School of Medicine, in Indianapolis. She was quite accomplished as a medical researcher in the fields of hematology and molecular biology. She was well known and esteemed in her field for her work, which was published in many professional medical journals.
She was fluent in Chinese, French and English. Her goal to obtain U.S. citizenship was accomplished in 2013. While studying in France, she enjoyed traveling throughout Europe. In the U.S., she especially enjoyed visiting the beaches of Florida; San Francisco; and the Redwoods of California.
Other interests included classical music, gardening, and accompanying her husband for thrift shopping and garage sales.
Most of all Xing was a kind, gentle and humble young woman, and an excellent wife and mother. She will be dearly missed.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by sons, James Joseph Li Winkel and Daniel John Li Winkel, both of Fishers; stepdaughters, Arin Winkel of Fishers and Abby Winkel of Danville; her parents, Xiaoyou and Hemei Li of China; and a brother, Jinjun Li of China. Other special friends who survive are "Doc" Paul and Betty Joiner, who with Sue and Robert Guillaud were instrumental in helping Xing settle in the United States, when she first arrived.
She was preceded in death by all four of her grandparents.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made for the children's college fund. Checks can be made out to James and/or Daniel Winkel for deposit in the Chase account that has been set up for them.
Calling on the family will be Monday, January 19, 2015 from 5pm to 8pm at Randall & Roberts Fishers Mortuary, 12010 Allisonville Road, Fishers. A short service will tentatively begin at 7:30pm. Arrangements for burial are pending.
